Quick Ways to See If Your Lawyer Is Legit
As a potential client, you may want to do a little extra research before hiring a Lawyer.
Depending on the Country and the location you search for a Lawyer, the rules drastically change. Still, there are a few KEYS that somehow can be useful in almost every Country.
Just a quick trip over to the lawyer’s website or Law Society /Bar profile can reveal information that he or she may not have disclosed. In addition, small search on Google.com may provide oodles of sensitive information on lawyers, including testimonials from past clients.
So if you need it (or if just curious), use these quick ways to research whether your lawyer is legit:
1. Law Society or Bar where the Lawyer is Registered.
Every lawyer who is licensed to practice law in a certain Country /Location must be listed in the corresponding Official directory.
Each licensed lawyer should appear on your Country /location’s Law Society /Bar association website (here’s Spain’s), and you can find them using a Registery number or the first or the last name. The profile may include basic contact information, whether the attorney can actively practice law, and sometimes any ethical trouble he or she may have gotten into, depending on each Country.
2. Google / Search Engines.
You can Google just about anything whenever you have a question, so why not look up your lawyer? Internet search engines should reveal any news stories, publications, or websites associated with your lawyer, but it may take some digging around to find something useful.
3. Local Directories.
Google should also bring up the lawyer’s profile in different Directories. It should be more informative than Contry Law Society or Bar Association (as those ones keep no reviews, and provide only limited information), but try to take the reviews with a grain of salt.
4. The Attorney’s Own Website.
You can find accolades, publications, testimonials, and even whether the lawyer offers free consultations by looking at his or her website. While a poorly designed site might not mean that attorney isn’t legit, but sometimes it’s not a great sign either.
5. Third-Party Rating Groups.
If up to this point you have found limited information on a lawyer’s profile or performance, there are third-party groups that will recognize when a lawyer is great.
